I’ve always had something of a love-hate thing with PowerPoint presentations. Although their potential is undoubted, target audiences tend to see them as cumbersome and outmoded. I have just read a book by Cliff Atkinson, writer of ‘Beyond Bullet Points’, who believes PowerPoint to be the software device that’s insipid rather than inspiring. Yet they seem like such a necessary part of education and learning. Thus, if you wish to avoid inflicting death by PowerPoint, let’s look at what you can do to keep your presentations slick, informative and alive!

Think of each of your presentations as if it was a website.

Shape the structure of your PowerPoint presentation like a website. Everyone pays extraordinary attention to detail with every aspect of the branding on their website – your presentation should follow this same rule. Aesthetic concerns are paramount, and your presentation should look polished and well-designed. Use a theme going throughout and avoid the use of bright contrasting colours, as they will distract your audience from what you’re trying to convey.

Always use high grade graphics from top notch stock image sites to add a unique quality to your slides. Some personal favourites of mine include Stockxpert, Shutterstock and iStockPhoto, however there are lots more out there, so if you are curious, do a search on Google for “Royalty Free Stock Photography”.

Less is More

Don’t fill up your slides with non relevant text – make them simple and straightforward. Sometimes actions speak louder than words. With PowerPoint, your main goal is to convey knowledge through words, images and flow charts. Your presentation is a visual representation of what you are talking about – not an alternative to the presenter. Even if it’s a simple line or quote, less is often more.

Use 3D

Give your diagrams extra character by making them three dimensional, and they will grab hold your viewers attention much more than any flat, boring diagrams. This works amazingly well with pyramids, as it will make these objects practically leap off the page, instead of being static and lifeless.

And Finally… Don’t Over Animate

Going animation happy and overdoing the movement on your template is a definite no no. Having items whizzing in and out from all over the place, moving sideways and bouncing up and down – will only confuse people. Should you wish to employ animation in your presentations, stick to simple and stylish fading in and out. Leave the flying about to your favourite cartoon characters!

Bill Buchanan’s death lifted eyebrows but shouldn’t really come as a surprise since 24 is 24! They kill supporting characters other than Jackand, thus far, Chloe.

Now that Season 7 is just about half-over, I’d like to review 24 season 5 which I think is the best season. Season 5 is when most of the old gang were together for the last time, including CTU. In the beginning, Michelle Dressler and President Palmer were killed to set off the season, then before the season ended, Edgar Stiles died and so did Tony (so it seemed).

The plot of Season 5 involved the highest office in the land, held by President Logan, in a sinister conspiracy with a clandestine group of opportunistic “business” men for control of new oil supply. Former President David Palmer discovered the conspiracy from the outset and was about to do something about it. His assassination kicked off Season 5.

In Season 5, the conspirators supported Russian separatists in conducting terrorist activities within the US soil so that deadly Sentox gas can be smuggled to Russia for use against the Russian government. When Jack Bauer and CTU thwarted the original arrangement, the separatists decided to release the gas here in the US as retribution against their American conspirators.

Meanwhile, the conspirators blamed Jack Bauer for the death of President Palmer and began implicating him for the terrorist activities. Jack soon found himself the target of an investigation driven by President Logan and his conspirators concocted to stop Jack from discovering more. Meanwhile, lives were at stake as the separatists were setting up for their next target, wherever that may be.

Major plots and subplots within the story:

- Jack and Audrey reunion after Jack’s 18 months disappearance from Season 4.
- Tony’s reaction after Michelle died.
- Chloe’s reaction to Edgar’s death.
- Lynn McGill taking over CTU.
- Homeland Security’s takeover of CTU after the attack on CTU.
- President Logan’s sinister coverup over his complicity with the assassination of President Palmer.
- Martha Logan, Aaron Pierce, and Mike Novick working together to figure out the best way to deal with President Logan.

Highlights of Season 5:

- Death of well-liked charactes such as President Palmer, Michelle Dressler, Tony Almeida, and Edgar Stiles. Tony had been Jack’s best friend since the first season. President Palmer was a recurring character who appeared enough time to be well-liked. Michelle Dressler was a regular since Season 2. And Edgar was the puppy of the bunch. His crush for Chloe while she kept him in abeyance as a friend created the geek romance we, the fans, needed to keep things interesting inside CTU.

- Episode Day 5, 6:00pm-7:00pm ended with a silent clock to symbolize the tragic deaths after CTU was hit by the terrorists with Sentox gas. Most haunting scene was Edgar saying goodbye to Chloe as he fell from the gas.

- Season 5 is the highest rating season so far. Season 6 did not fare as well and Season 7 was postponed until November this year.

- Emmy Awards for Season 5: Kiefer Sutherland for Actor in Drama Series and 24 for Drama Series.
