Prison programs for inmates sprang from the need to rehabilitate and offer those who are incarcerated a good likelihood of successful reentry into society after they have been released. These programs give former felons a better understanding of the root cause of their substance abuse and the negative behavior. They help inmates change their way of thinking by offering support groups, drug therapy and other treatment modalities that are suited to the person’s needs. Other programs that help work through substance abuse even offer correspondence courses in the form of e-books available on the web.

Numerous studies have supported the finding that participation in prison programs to cut down on recidivism have significantly kept these offenders from reentering the justice system. Achieving higher education while behind bars, or gaining marketable skills, will provide former felons with more options and a brighter outcome, once they are released back into society.

Rehabilitating inmates is definitely in society’s best interest, and must be addressed. The bottom line is that they are also human beings. By providing alternatives through the various prison rehabilitation programs, we are also providing them a second opportunity to correct their wrongdoings, and live more fulfilling lives free of crime.
