Reading is a basic yet essential requirement in life.Children at a very early age in life should be introduced to books and reading. The best tip would be to keep it simple.Children will want to learn if you make the subject matter fun as reading will not seem like a chore to them.

How do I start?

You need to start with the basics so introduce the child to the letters of the alphabet. Teach the shapes and sounds a letter makes.Only when the child has mastered this should you start pairing letters together.Always speak loudly, slowly and clearly. If you need a little help or inspiration buy some phonics flashcards which will help.

Progressing from letters to words

When your child has mastered the alphabet and the sounds the letters make you can progress to phonics books and worksheets.Choose a book with plenty of colourful images and make sure the font is simple and bold.As with the start of the process you should continue to keep the activity fun.Of course this is educational but if you make it more of a fun task then your child will respond much better.
If you ask the child to choose the book they will feel even more engaged in the process.Try and break the reading down into bite sized pieces so as not to over face the child. You may feel your child is struggling don’t give up. Offer lots of encouragement.

Offering Encouragement

One of the best ways to get a child to read is to read to them yourself.Pay attention to the books you child enjoys reading.Reading out loud with your child will develop their love of books.Bedtime is an ideal time to enjoy a book together.Bedtime is one of the best times to read a book together.Reading at bedtime is always a great time to read with your child. Try and offer variety and when the child has become competent with one book move on to something else.As them to read a variety of different things and remember you don’t just have to stick to books. Why not try baking together and asking the child to read the recipe.Always try and be supportive and don’t worry about the pace your child takes when learning.
